Treats

Written by Rachelle Bish, Jellybean Rattery

Some of my favorite treats are blueberries, strawberries, banana, water chestnut, red grapes, unsweetened Greek yogurt, chicken bones (cooked is fine!), various meat and mixed baby foods, asparagus, bamboo shoots, flax seeds, black oil sunflower seeds, mealworms, apple (no seeds), scrambled eggs, rolled oats, and cooked fish.

I highly recommend this resource for treats. It has a collection of studies on the health effects of different foods. The recipe is for a homemade blend, but I take items off the ingredients list to use as treats.

Silver's Rattery has a great list of safe foods you can also reference and consider:

Treats should be given in moderation, and the treats themselves should be carefully considered for your rats' health. For example, excessive sugar is linked to increased cancer risks and excessive protein is linked to kidney failure.
